Five Ways to Moisturize Locally This Winter

Excerpt from CHICAGO mag.
Read full CHICAGO mag article here
The trials that Chicago winters impose on hair and skin are as numerous as they are gruesome: chapped lips, dry cheekbones, desiccated elbows, and parched hair are par for the course, and it only gets worse from there. Though we do what we can to combat the cold with serums, water bottles, hand cream, and the like, sometimes only a professional can save our flaky hides. To make it to Spring 2015 with most of your cells intact, try one of these local hydrating treatments.
For a wintry scent and a summery glow: a mint facial at Leah Chavie Salon
Skincare guru Leah Chavie is all about the facial massage. “I use upward motions for everything,” she says. “You can feel your skin tightening and lifting, can’t you?” She’ll customize her mint facial for whatever skin problem you’re having, be it clogged pores or flaky dryness, and you’ll spend the next hour relaxing under heated blankets while she massages your face back to its summery glow. For extra dehydrated skin, spring for Chavie’s stem cell treatment (DNA CryoStem Cell Therapy), which takes effect over the course of six days, resulting in literal rejuvenation, a phrase that—until now—was associated solely with Bahamian beaches. Holiday Beauty

The scent of crisp peppermint and a large family meal complete with a side of cranberry sauce are quintessential holiday traditions.
Did you know these beloved flavors can also give you beautiful skin?
Peppermint oil is easy to find and we love using it in our facials come the holiday season. You can also use it in a variety of treatments at home. Mix peppermint oil with a base oil like grape seed oil, or jojoba, and apply it to your skin. The menthol in peppermint helps cool your face and reduce redness.
Mint also has a naturally high content of solicylic acid, which is used in many skin care products. The acid softens and loosens dry skin as well as unclog pores.
Cranberries are naturally rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K and plenty of other antioxidants, which will keep your skin looking healthy and even decrease dark circles. This power-packed berry also acts as a natural toner, and when combined with moisture-rich honey and yogurt, creates a soothing mask.

Festive Body Scrubs at Leah Chavie Skincare Boutique

With the weather starting to get a tad chilly in Chicago, I can’t think of a better way to escape from the cold than from a day of pampering at Leah Chavie Skincare Boutique in Lincoln Park. Whether you’ve read about her treatments in magazines or seen Leah in action on TV, you know that she must be the real deal.  The boutique offers variety of services that are unique to the boutique. For my day of pampering, I received the cranberry mint body scrub. Leah Chavie has added the cranberry element to her scrubs to include the benefits of antioxidants. Antioxidants are beneficial for a variety of reasons when it comes to skincare. They tighten and firm the skin reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Even though wrinkles aren’t something I’m particularly worried about right now, it’s good to have firm skin especially when exposed to other elements like harsh weather that can affect that elasticity.

Cold-Weather Beauty Secrets From the Pros

Orginially published on makeitbetter.net in November 2014 written by Jenny Muslin
As the seasons change, your beauty regimen should change too.
Your skin may crave a heavier moisturizer due to dryness from the colder temperatures. Or your makeup colors may shift from pastels and brights to jewel tones and deep berry shades. We scored some one-on-one time with industry experts to find out their best seasonal beauty tips.
Should we change our products with the change in season?
“Yes! Listen to your skin; it knows what it needs. Many people stick to the same skincare routine every day, but your skin changes daily, like the weather. It’s as simple as using hydrating products when your skin is dry and oil-free products if your skin is oily.” Leah Chavie, owner of Leah Chavie Skincare Boutique
